Root System and its Features

The Root System: The part of the plant that grows under the ground is called the root system. It always grows towards the gravity and moisture, away from the light. The roots of a plant are mostly seen underground and look brown in colour. The tiny thread-like structures over the roots are the root hairs. The tip of the root is covered by root cap which is preventive in function. Root and the root hairs form the root system.

Features of Root:

  • Root grows towards the soil and away from the light. Hence, it is called as geotropic structure.
  • Root does not possess green colour pigment, the chlorophyll. It cannot produce food.
  • Root does not bear leaves, buds or flowers. Roots along with their root hairs absorb water and minerals from the soil.
  • Function of roots :

    1. Fixation  : Roots spread out into the soil and hold the plant firmly to the ground. Thsis prevents the plant from being puled out easily or blown away by the wind.

    2. Conduction :  Roots absorb water and minerls from the soil and pass them to the stem. The plant uses water and minerals to manufacture food and carry out life processes.

    3. Preventing soil erosion : Roots help bind the soil particles together. In this way, roots prevent th soil from being blown away by the wind or washed away by water.
